Univision just launched an unprecedented fundraising effort, kick-started by a $500,000 grant from The California Endowment, to raise funds from Univision viewers as part of their “Estamos con los Niños” (“We Are With The Children”) campaign to provide humanitarian relief and assistance to children fleeing life-threatening violence and economic hardship in Central America and seeking refuge in the United States. Donations will go towards non-profit organizations and charities on the frontlines of this urgent humanitarian situation.
Univision will engage its viewers across its media platforms, starting with special segments in Despierta America (Wake Up America), Hoy (Today), and El Gordo y La Flaca (The Scoop & The Skinny). On September 20th, an hour special will air on Univision Network’s popular variety show Sábado Gigante (Giant Saturday) to focus on the human side of this unfolding humanitarian situation and the effort to support these c hildren. Univision will also air public service announcements integrated with their national programs and will be driving a conversations on social media channels using the hashtag #EstamosConLosNiños in Spanish or #TheyAreChildren in English.
Children are fleeing unimaginable violence in Honduras (the murder capital of the world), El Salvador, and Guatemala. This region is twice as dangerous for civilians as Iraq at the height of the war. The number of children fleeing to the U.S. is up 92 percent, and it is expected to continue to rise, given the skyrocketing violence in Central America. Save the Children will lead the effort to collect the donations from Univision audiences by phone, text message and online and then funds raised will go to well-respected national charities and service providers: Catholic Charities, CARECEN (Central American Resource Center) and Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), as well as other groups providing critical support to these refugee children across the nation. The funds will be used to provide a range of services, including safe and humane housing, basic medical care and legal representation as the children face immigration hearings that will determine their futures. Viewers and listeners will be able to donate by calling 1-800-NINOS-79, texting the word NINOS to 20222, or going online to savethechildren.org/ninos.
